WP e-Commerce Review For Wordpress

March 25, 2009 by Tyrone

wp-ecommerce WP e-Commerce plugin for Wordpress seems to be one of the most commonly used (currently 175,000+ downloads) shopping cart system across the board. I’ve been testing the latest version 3.6.10 and it has a lot of additional features compared to review on eShop I wrote recently.

The WP e-Commerce Wordpress Plugin was developed by a New Zealand company called Instinct. Since this company has dedicated funds and resources to this plugin, I presumed they would want to make money from selling this plugin. Lucky for us, they didn’t and have been giving away this plugin for free. Though, the first thing you will see on the front page of their website is the following:

Home of the famous WordPress e-Commerce Plugin

The WordPress e-Commerce plugin is a state-of-the-art e-Commerce platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards and usability. It is both free and priceless at the same time.

Now, being the state of the art e-commerce plugin is a bold statement and I have tested out numerous e-commerce software that I will be comparing this too. Let me review this plugin to test if their statement is true.

THE PROS

Easy Installation
It took me less than 5 minutes to upload and install without any errors or conflict with other plugins so far. I could easily find the newly created section in Wordpress administration called e-Commerce. It contained Sales, Products, Groups, Variation, Marketing and Settings links making it very easy to find what you need. I am glad they did this and made it simple.

Well Defined Categories / Groups Section
There is a self-explanatory tab that says Groups which allows you to add unlimited categories and subcategories to your shop. It’s very standard to see this available in e-commerce systems and it’s great to see this part of WP e-Commerce plugin. In comparison to other Wordpress shopping cart plugins they utilise pages to separate categories and it becomes a total nightmare without proper documentation.

Adding Products Is Easy
Adding products is easy when you click on the Products link. It offers a wide range of settings to customise your products including price and stock controls, shipping and weight settings, product variations, merchant notes, product downloads, coupon codes and promotions. These are very important when you have different products to sell and helps you distinguish between A and B product.

Widgets make customisation a breeze
What I’ve found quite handy are the customisable widgets that you can install on your sidebar as part of this plugin. A common widget people have on their website is the shopping cart. Having this displayed allows a customer to see what they have currently selected, then head to the checkout section to pay for all their items. The new widgets you’ll see in this plugin are: Shopping Cart, Groups, Categories, Price Range, Product Specials, Latest Products, Price Range and Donations. You can select anyone of those to display on Wordpress at any time.

Profit Using Marketing And Cross Promotion Tools Provided
Under the Marketing link it allows you to offer coupon codes for any product in your range. It’s a great way to encourage your customers to shop with the coupon code to follow through with a purchase. It’s a definite plus for me to have this tool built into the system. Some additional options you can switch on are:

  • Cross Sales within your shop
  • Show Share This (Social Bookmarks)
  • How Customer Found Us Survey option

Many Payment Gateways Available and SSL Connection Included
WP e-Commerce comes with a few pre-installed payment gateways including Chronopay, PayPal, PayPal – Express, Google Checkout, and manual payment (for cash or money orders). If you want other payment gateways they offer such as Authorize.net or eWay, then you will have to purchase the Gold Cart Module. Also all transactions are processed securely through an SSL connection if you have SSL installed on your server.

An e-Commerce Plugin That Is Free
Lastly to top off the PROS, WP e-Commerce Plugin is FREE and it’s worthwhile to try it if you are considering using a shopping cart facility in Wordpress.

THE CONS

Lack Of Documentation
I am quite surprised from a company that has devoted resources and time to develop this plugin that they do not have a detailed documentation available. Especially when programmers develop a software there needs to be a way to track back and make changes, which is where documentation helps. So I was a bit disappointed. Their website has a very good “description” of each section but lacks in details on how to install, modify and add other functions. If you’re a beginner and do not have any programming experience then I would forget trying to tweak any of the files yourself because you will get frustrated reading through poorly organised code, with insufficient comments. I suspect they want to keep the details of the code within the company so they can offer add-on solutions they can sell.

Invoice Printing Is Not Available
This may sound simple to implement, but I am very surprised that this is not standard in their plugin. Most e-commerce software have options to allow you to print invoices, packaging slips (which is available) and labels. This is one area I believe they have totally overlooked. How do I print out an invoice to send to a customer or a label to put on my shipping box? I know you can just hit print on your Internet browser screen but what if I want to customise the invoice or label in different sizes? This is an area that Instinct needs to look at.

wp-ecommerce_sales_screen

Inclusive of Tax Option Is Not Available
For business owners operating in Australia like myself, our customers expect that prices displayed have tax included. Unfortunately the plugin forces you to add tax separately at the checkout and only show prices excluding tax on each item. It’s another issue that needs to be address for future upgrades.

Lacking Reports
If you click on the Sales link, it will take you to a page showing sales for the month and columns of basic data, such as sales, pending transactions and closed transactions. There are no reports to say where your customers come from, no reports for sales of dollar amounts, quantities sold and customer item was sold to. These are usually standard within an e-commerce software and also very important to have if you’re running a business. One just has to look at ZenCart’s reporting system to get an idea of how comprehensive their system is.

Lack Of Template Options
A few other reviewers have mentioned about the lack of template options available. At the moment there are 4 or 5 of them, and most of them have proven to be not very useful. Additionally if you have a customised template for your blog, integration of this plugin can be a real nightmare because there are no detailed documentation on how to edit certain areas of this plugin.

Conclusion
I am still on the hunt to find a state of the art e-commerce plugin for Wordpress. I think Instinct have made a very bold statement about their plugin and personally I still see further development needed for this plugin to be a complete turn-key solution for an e-commerce site. For a beginner to use this plugin it maybe sufficient enough to do a few transactions per month. But for a business owner, I would still stick to other solutions available such as ZenCart, OsCommerce and Magento.

My rating for this plugin is a 3 out of 5 stars.

G’day. Thanks for posting about our Plugin. Here are some updates for you and your readers:

    Lack Of Documentation
Its getting there with the upcoming launch of 3.7 and we’re about to introduce a Wiki. Actually even 3.6.10 has better inline code documentation – especially the variations files.

    Invoice Printing Is Not Available
Yes it is. You have to click on the more details and then there is a print option. I was thinking this post might be out of date but maybe you just missed this feature :P

Inclusive of Tax Option Is Not Available
This is an option in 3.7 since New Zealand law is the same as Australian law.

    Lacking Reports
We’re presently Beta Testing a new Graphs Module that shows much more info. I would LOVE to work with somebody on this – maybe you Tyrone?

    Lack Of Template Options
When you upgrade to 3.7 (not released yet) you will notice that everything is powered by a template engine. We started with the shopping cart in the sidebar, then we did the products page and we’ve just about finished the checkout page. Meaning pretty much everything is customizable using Templates.

    Its the real deal!

    Hi Dan,

    Thanks for your comment.

I’m quite excited to see the new version and it’s great to see more documentation for the plugin as well.

I’ve sent an email to you about the other parts that you’ve mentioned as well.

When can we expect the new plugin to be released?

    Thanks.

    Hey Tyrone,

Great post. I am an experienced web developer who is creating my first web shop, I’m using wp-ecommerce with the Gold Cart optional upgrade. What a system!

The templating system still has alot to be desired, I’m used to Virtuemart within Joomla. It is alot easier at this time than wp-ecommerce but due to my technical skills getting around and making customisations is a breeze!

I’ve added a markup system and foreign currency API to my store so that I can drop ship items and manage my profits within the WordPress Administration, as soon as I’ve ironed it all out I’ll link and screenshot it for your readers.

As you’ll see if you jump around the product pages I’ve moved code around in order to better present critical store items (e.g. Buy now, product variations, shopping cart widget, etc.)

I’m still working on the site and am looking forward to making substantial sales as well as become an expert at using and customising Instinct’s great e-commerce plugin! :D

I’m reading Starting an Online Business for Dummies, can you recommend any other references to help me?

    Thanks!

  12. Tyrone on Mon, 13th Apr 2009 1:39 pm

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for your comment about WP e-commerce. I checked out your shop: Visser.com.au and it looks really good! Also it works well. I tried adding some of the items to the shopping cart and it’s simple to follow through to check out.

Though as you said there are a lot of things to be desired about WP-ecommerce. What additional suggestions could you provide to improve WP e-commerce?
Also, tell me a little more about the customisations you’ve done for your shop as I would like to add them to mine as well.

Here are some references I recommend reading as well:

Also regarding the templating I’d just like to add that our next release 3.7 is about to hit the streets (maybe one or two weeks) and it is hot. We’ll write a couple of tutorials on how to use the templating engine to get the ball rolling – then people can add there own to the Wiki :)

I can’t wait! This will be very exciting and I’ll email you some additional ideas for future releases.

    Thanks again!

  16. Michael Visser on Fri, 17th Apr 2009 2:33 am

    Hey Dan and Tyrone,

Sounds good, lets Skype up, my ID is “visser.labs”. Dan I’m getting pretty active on the Instinct forum, speak soon. Thanks for the references Tyrone.

    Some ideas:
    - better tax support, similiar to what PayPal has done in allowing sellers to specify different tax amounts for different countries (e.g. Australia, U.S., Europe).
    - more options for advanced search (show/hide thumbnail, etc.)
    - integrate product breadcrumbs with existing wordpress breadcrumb plugins for consistent styling
    - better inline and online documentation reg: marketing page (e.g. cross sales, survey fields, etc.)
    - add javascript popup calendar to coupon settings
    - assign coupon to individual/many products (e.g. coupon for 1 product in particular)
    - better Add/Edit product / Variation add/edit/delete integration
    - add description/additional description tinymce support for products/categories
    - support for product prices to include “.00″, e.g. “220.00″ currently comes up as “220″.

    Here’s a good starting list…

  17. Dan Milward on Fri, 17th Apr 2009 10:33 am

Hey Mate. I’ve added you to my Skype list – ping me when you’re online and I’ll hook you up with SVN access to our latest development build. I’ll also share something else pretty cool with you :D

    Hi Genim,

Great that you are trying this plugin. I highly recommend it for Wordpress any day. I have used it myself for other websites and it’s the most easiest to get a simple shopping cart setup.

Processing payments couldn’t be any easier and having the Gold Cart gives you more flexibility to do more things.

Also I agree, Shane has been really helpful and his a great support guy!

    Hi Tyrone and Dan,

I plan on using WP Commerce to launch our online store. I like the features of 1shoppingcart. They provide checkout links.

Is this possible to use with 1shoppingcart? I noticed on your products section you have under HTML link. Is this where you would place the 1shoppingcart link?

    Thanks

    Harry

  37. Tyrone on Tue, 1st Sep 2009 12:22 pm

    Hi Harry,

From my understanding it doesn’t work with 1shoppingcart. The WP Commerce plugin is good to link to Paypal and a few other payment processors.

I would suggest you submit a ticket to Dan and ask if it’s possible on his website: http://www.instinct.co.nz

    Thanks.

    Hi Infoproservice,

Thanks for your comment. I would recommend checking out Magento Commerce first – http://www.magentocommerce.com. It’s a very rich open source ecommerce software and it has all the resources to get started on. Also you should check out my review as well on the blog.

    Thanks.

  41. Eric S on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 5:38 am

Ty – i have been reading this entire thread b/w u and Dan about WP e-commerce, you seem to say you use it and you like it. Then, you recommend checking out Magento. As far as I can see aren’t these guys competitors?

Also, I don’t know if Dan is still following this or not, but when i get to the Instinct WP E-commerce page…I don’t know where to click or what to do next. I am so used to seeing a gallery of examples. I can’t find this.

I am a newbie and do not know much about this stuff. I want a ecommerce site where I can sell 3-4 products, blog about it, and have some cool widgets, videos etc. I want it to be super simple and streamlined.

  42. Tyrone on Sun, 11th Oct 2009 4:05 pm

    Hey Eric,

Thanks for your comment. For something simple like selling 3-4 products, I do recommend using WP-ecommerce. The reason behind this is because it’s easy and simple to setup. Magento is a full package and for serious ecommerce sites. I would only recommend Magento if you are looking to have hundreds of products.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to email me at support@tyroneshum.com

    Thanks.

  43. Dan Milward on Mon, 12th Oct 2009 8:41 am

    That said…

We have one guy in Germany that uses WP e-Commerce with over 10,000 products. He sells musical instruments and scores.

To a point the answer goes much deeper then just the number of products you sell. Do you like the product management interface for instance? Do you want to run a WordPress site + a Magento site? Do you like the themes available? Do these software solutions offer the shipping settings for my own personal needs as a seller? And the list could go on.

I’ve heard people say that Magento is hard to setup, its good for e-commerce but it is not as good at being a normal website (in terms of page management and SEO) when compared to WordPress.

Whereas WordPress is a good website with a good e-commerce system on top. So in that sense there are pros and cons.

    Best,
    Dan

  44. Dan Milward on Mon, 12th Oct 2009 8:54 am

    @ Eric S, From here: http://www.instinct.co.nz/e-commerce/

Click the big orange Download Link then install the Plugin. Damnit though you’re right about the examples – there are some listed in the right hand column but we could do a better job of that :)

Checkout icondock.com which in my opinion is not only the best looking e-Commerce site online “but” it is also powered by WP e-Commerce.

(And it sells hundreds of products)

    Best,
    Dan

    Dear friends,
I am from Malaysia, trying to set up an online store and thinking whether WP-Ecommerce compatible with local merchant eg. Maybank2u.com

    Thanks for info.

    Cathy

    Hi Cathy,

Thanks for your comments. I’m pretty sure WP-Ecommerce doesn’t offer MayBank2u.com at the moment. It’s got common payment gateways like Paypal and others.

I would recommend hiring someone to customise it if you want to use MayBank2u.com

    Thanks!

    Hi all,

I think I’m the guy Dan already referred to (although not from Germany but The Netherlands). We implemented a couple of shops with wp e-commerce and we’re really pleased with the plugin. There are always thing to be improved but hey, this plugin is alive and kicking. It’s fairly easy to implement your own local payment gateway and with the new theming options you can really make your shop stand out of the crowd. And indeed one of our shops has over 10.000 products in its catalog generating ±70% Google traffic through the shop.

Take a look at our portfolio to see some examples

Thanks for the information and great content. I am always going through the internet looking for good content to get ideas for my easy home based business web sites and future articles on this general subject.

@Tarun, this is something for the support forum. There are plenty of people in the forum who are willing to help. http://www.getshopped.org/forums/

I agree with Taeke – its not fair to turn somebody elses website into a support forum :P

    Tyrone,

    Very nice detailed review.
I agree with you… this WP plug in is not for big online stores.
But it works very well for small ones that i attach to some blogs i run and make sales with drop shippers.

I found this cart very buggy, the support poor, and google checkout didn’t work. The developers should spend more time fixing such issues, and less patrolling the net to flame critics! In the end I used the shopp cart.

Hello. I disagree with the previous commenter – the WP e-Commerce Plugin team work really hard and support lots of people.

I could equally say that I think people like you should spend more time working on your own site then posting your negative thoughts and comments around here ;)

Anyway first of all the WP e-Commerce Plugin has a new website / home. It is all based around providing better support. The forums are tidier and there are lots of video tutorials. And there is heaps more documentation.

If you don’t believe me take a look at the new GetShopped showcase and Consultants page. The proof of the pudding is in the eating (not just empty words) and here are some links to prove it :)

  70. taeke on Thu, 4th Feb 2010 10:22 pm

@genim, could you point me to your thread in the getshopped forum?

  71. Dan Milward on Fri, 5th Feb 2010 7:59 am

The new forum has only been open for a week – not a month. Either way we want to help “everybody” within reason ;P

So yeah I’d be intereseted to see your forum post too.
